Sinusitis
Key symptoms: Facial pain or pressure, blocked or runny nose, reduced sense of smell, lasting more than 10 days.
When we cannot treat: Severe symptoms, signs of complications, immunocompromised patients, or pregnancy (refer to GP).
If appropriate: Antibiotic therapy under PGD where clinically indicated.

Key symptoms: Sore throat, pain on swallowing, fever, tonsillar exudate.
When we cannot treat: Severe or life-threatening symptoms, peritonsillar abscess, suspected epiglottitis, immunocompromised patients.
If appropriate: Antibiotic therapy under PGD where clinically indicated.

Key symptoms: Ear pain, fever, irritability, reduced hearing.
When we cannot treat: Under 1 year, perforation of the eardrum, grommets in situ, recurrent episodes, immunocompromised.
If appropriate: Antibiotic therapy under PGD where clinically indicated.

Key symptoms: Redness, swelling, warmth and pain around the bite site, signs of infection.
When we cannot treat: Systemic infection, severe allergic reaction, large area of spreading redness, immunocompromised.
If appropriate: Antibiotic therapy under PGD where clinically indicated.

Key symptoms: Sores, blisters and crusting — typically on the face, hands or scalp.
When we cannot treat: Widespread or severe infection, immunocompromised, recurrent episodes (refer to GP).
If appropriate: Treated with a topical treatment for localised infection, or oral antibiotics where the infection is more widespread.

Key symptoms: Painful rash, blistering on one side of the body, burning or tingling sensation.
When we cannot treat: Involvement of the eye or ear, immunocompromised, pregnant, or beyond 24 hours from rash onset (too late for antivirals).
If appropriate: Antiviral therapy under PGD where clinically indicated.

Key symptoms: Dysuria, frequency, urgency, suprapubic pain.
When we cannot treat: Men, pregnant women, under 16, over 64, recurrent UTIs (2+ in 6 months), catheter users, symptoms lasting more than 7 days, or fever/loin pain (refer to GP).
If appropriate: Antibiotic therapy under PGD where clinically indicated.

The consultation with our pharmacist is free for everyone. If medication is clinically appropriate and prescribed, standard NHS prescription charges apply (currently £9.90 per item) unless you are in an exempt group.
Will I have to pay for any medication?
If treatment is needed and prescribed, standard NHS prescription charges apply — currently £9.90 per item. You pay nothing if you are exempt. Exempt groups include those under 16, aged 60 or over, pregnant women (and those who have had a baby in the last 12 months with a valid exemption certificate), people on certain benefits, and anyone holding a valid NHS prescription prepayment certificate (PPC).
Do I need to see my GP first?
No. That’s the whole point of Pharmacy First — you can come directly to Wilmslow Pharmacy without a GP appointment or referral.
Do I need to be registered with a GP?
No. You do not need to be registered with a GP to use this service. Simply walk in to Wilmslow Pharmacy.
What conditions can you treat?
We can treat 7 common conditions: sinusitis, sore throat, earache (otitis media), infected insect bites, impetigo, shingles, and uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs). Each condition has its own age and clinical criteria — for example, UTI treatment is for women aged 16-64 only.
What if my condition can’t be treated here?
If our pharmacist determines that your condition needs further investigation or treatment beyond our scope, we’ll refer you to the appropriate NHS service, such as your GP or urgent care.
Can children use Pharmacy First?
Yes, several conditions can be treated in children, but the age criteria vary by condition. For example, earache is for children aged 1-17, sore throat from age 5, sinusitis from age 12, and shingles for adults aged 18 and over. UTI treatment is limited to women aged 16-64.
