Who gets free NHS prescriptions?
You are entitled to free NHS prescriptions if any of the following apply. Bring proof of exemption when collecting your medication.
Free NHS prescriptions for anyone aged 15 or under.
Free if you are aged 16, 17 or 18 and in qualifying full-time education.
Free NHS prescriptions from your 60th birthday onwards.
Free with a valid maternity exemption certificate (MatEx), valid for 12 months after the birth.
Free with a medical exemption certificate (MedEx) for conditions like diabetes, epilepsy, thyroid disorders and more.
Free with an HC2 certificate, or if you receive Income Support, Universal Credit (under threshold), JSA or ESA income-based.

NHS prescriptions — your questions answered
How much does an NHS prescription cost?
The standard NHS prescription charge is £9.90 per item (2026/27 rate). Each separate item on your prescription is charged individually. Free for anyone who qualifies for an exemption.
What is a Prescription Prepayment Certificate (PPC)?
A PPC lets you get all your NHS prescriptions for a fixed price: £32.05 for 3 months or £114.50 for 12 months. If you need more than 11 items a year it saves you money. You can buy one online at the NHS Business Services Authority website.
How do I switch my repeat prescriptions to Wilmslow Pharmacy?
Just ask your GP to nominate us as your pharmacy (Wilmslow Pharmacy, Dean Row Road). It’s a one-time setup and then all your future prescriptions come directly to us electronically. You can also register online through your GP’s NHS app.

What proof of exemption do I need?

Can you dispense private prescriptions too?
Yes, we dispense both NHS and private prescriptions. Private prescription charges depend on the medication and come with a dispensing fee. Ask our team for a quote.
