Eligible people can receive the NHS MenB vaccination free of charge. If you are not eligible, you can use our private vaccination service.
Free NHS MenB vaccination
You must be eligible. The NHS service is available if you are:
- Born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008; or
- Born on or after 21 July 2001 and starting undergraduate higher education in autumn 2026; or
- Born on or after 21 July 2001 and entering eligible further education for the first time in autumn 2026 while living in college accommodation or halls of residence.
International students and students from Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are included. You may need evidence of your university or college offer.
All NHS MenB appointments must be arranged through the NHS website. Please do not use our private booking calendar for an NHS appointment.

Meningitis B is a bacterial infection that can cause meningitis and blood poisoning (septicaemia). It can develop within hours and be life-threatening, and survivors can be left with lasting effects. The MenB vaccine protects against meningococcal group B, the most common cause of bacterial meningitis in the UK.
Babies and young children are at highest risk. The vaccine can be given from 2 months of age.
There’s a second peak in older teenagers and students, who may also want protection.
Given as one injection into the upper arm for adults and older children. Babies follow a different schedule — our pharmacist will advise.
What is meningitis B?
A serious infection that can move quickly
Meningitis B is caused by meningococcal group B bacteria, which can inflame the lining of the brain and cause blood poisoning.
Symptoms can appear and worsen within hours. Early treatment is vital, which is why prevention matters.
Most common in children under 5, with a second peak in teenagers and young adults aged 15–24, especially students.
It can be life-threatening, and some survivors are left with hearing loss, scarring or other long-term effects.

Common questions
How many doses are needed?
For adults and older children it’s usually a single dose. Babies need more doses on a set schedule — our pharmacist will confirm what’s right for you at your appointment.
From what age can it be given?
The MenB vaccine can be given from 2 months of age, and there’s no upper age limit, so older children, teenagers and adults can have it too.
Is this the same as the MenACWY vaccine?
No. The MenB vaccine protects against meningococcal group B. MenACWY protects against four different groups (A, C, W and Y). Many people choose to have both for broader cover.
Are there any side effects?
Usually mild — a sore leg or arm, and a short-lived fever which is common in babies. Serious reactions are very rare.
What are the warning signs of meningitis?
Fever, severe headache, stiff neck, dislike of bright light, and a rash that doesn’t fade under a glass. In babies, a high-pitched cry, floppiness or refusing feeds. Seek urgent medical help if you’re worried.
