Vietnam travel health FAQs
Common questions we answer at our Wilmslow travel clinic
How far in advance do I need vaccinations for Vietnam?
Aim to book 6 to 8 weeks before departure. Some vaccines, such as Japanese encephalitis and rabies, are given as a course of more than one dose over several weeks. If time is short, it is still worth coming in, hepatitis A and typhoid can be given closer to travel and still offer good protection.
Do I need malaria tablets for Vietnam?
For many travellers, no. The major cities and popular spots such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Ha Long Bay, Nha Trang and the Red River and Mekong deltas are considered low risk, so antimalarial tablets are not usually advised. Risk is higher in rural and forested areas, particularly in the central highlands and near borders. We will check your itinerary and advise accordingly.
Should I consider the Japanese encephalitis vaccine for Vietnam?
It is worth considering if you are spending longer periods in rural or rice-growing areas, especially during and just after the wet season, or staying for a month or more. The vaccine is given as a two-dose course, so please allow enough time before travel. We will help you weigh up the risk based on your plans.
Is dengue fever a risk in Vietnam?
Yes. Dengue occurs throughout Vietnam, including towns and cities, and is spread by mosquitoes that mainly bite during the day. There is no widely used vaccine for most travellers, so prevention relies on bite avoidance: use a repellent containing up to 50% DEET, cover up with loose clothing and use screens or nets where needed.
